Remember when “Dirty Chai” was the best thing since sliced bread? Well move over chai, there’s a new tea in town and many are hailing it as better quality caffeine than coffee with the health benefits of a smoothie. So what is it? Matcha.
Matcha is a form of green tea enjoyed for centuries in Japan and China. The powder form comes from the tea leaves that are all ground up. This means you don’t lose out on the nutrients by simply steeping the tea in hot water, because you are consuming the whole leaf! Experts celebrate matcha for its ability to help in lowering blood pressure and cholesterol as well as being jam packed with antioxidants such as polyphenols which naturally occur in plants that may help defend our bodies against cancer.
While matcha does contain caffeine, in my experience, it doesn’t have the same ‘crash’ that coffee or espresso can. It’s a slow and steady build that allows me to stay focused for hours. I would highly recommend trying it out and comparing how it feels compared to what you normally drink in the morning.
A word of caution, not all matchas are created equal. With any craze comes imposters (unfortunately) depending where they are grown and processed, certain matchas can contain traces of heavy metals or harmful chemicals. Be particularly careful with green tea grown in China that is not certified organic.
Matcha can be used in a variety of ways. A sprinkle on your morning oats, an ingredient in your smoothie, matcha-flavored ice cream, bake it in cookies, add it to your favorite icing for a nutrient punch, or simply drink as hot or iced tea mixed with your favorite milk.
